3 Terrific Tips for a Last-Minute University application

Updated: Mar 3, 2022

Procrastination and delays happen to all of us, for varying reasons. This is true for many students and families thinking about how to apply to college as well. As you apply to college, be mindful that there are many considerations you should bear in mind. The decision to apply to college should not be taken lightly, even if you are submitting a last-minute university application. Use the tips below as a starting guide for how to apply to college, and remember that Wisdem USA is prepared to help you with your last-minute university application.

Tips on How to Pick a College

By submitting a last-minute university application, you're already facing somewhat of an uphill climb. As such, it is especially important for you to be thoughtful about how to pick a college. Because you may not be able to devote as much time to your college admissions essays as in normal circumstances, you might be better advised to prioritize colleges and universities that have less stringent writing requirements for their application materials as you think about how to pick a college. For example, a college like Columbia University almost always requires applicants to complete several college essays, whereas other colleges require no additional college essays. Some, in fact, don't even require a personal statement essay at all (although these tend to be much less selective).

More about how to pick a college

The goal of participating in the college admissions process is to...you know, get admitted to college. So if you are submitting a last-minute university application, be sure to align your school choices in a way that yields a high likelihood of success as you think about how to pick a college. For instance, the commonly recommended approach in non-time constrained situations is to apply to a small number of "safety" schools and concentrate primarily on "moderate" and "stretch" schools. In your case, however, you may want to concentrate more heavily on safety and moderate schools if you're submitting a last-minute university application. This will give you a better shot at more college admissions, while also allowing you to still allocate what little time you do have to college essays for a small number of stretch schools (should you choose to pursue them). Along these same lines, be sure to check deadlines and college admissions policies. Some schools may offer rolling admissions, which can be more forgiving for later applications. Fill Out All College Application Forms

Looking for a mental breather amid the hectic blitz a last-minute university application? Try data entry. Specifically, entering your own data in the college application forms included as part of the college admissions process. Whether you are using the Common Application, the Coalition Application, the Common HBCU Application, the UC Application, the SUNY Application, or a school-specific application (e.g., Georgetown or Florida A&M), one universal "joy" of the college admissions process is filling out college application forms. Doing so can be time-consuming and tedious, but it also does not require your mental energy in the same way that writing a college admissions essay does. In light of that, plan to spend an hour or so (sometimes more), filling out the college application forms that are part of your college application materials. Also, be advised that some may need your parent or legal guardian's electronics signature due to FERPA. Although they may not be as exciting as some of the other elements of the process, college application forms are critical, so take them seriously, review them closely, fill them out completely, and don't let them stand in the way of your college admissions.
